The GlebeOn the first page about shopping in Ottawa we featured, among other shopping areas, the Bank Street Promenade. It's not too far between the Bank Street Promenade and The Glebe if you would like to visit both in the same day. You simply continue down Bank Street a couple of kilometers to reach Ottawa's unique Glebe district. The Glebe is not a shopping mall, it's a stretch of urban city thoroughfare that offers the shopping visitor the non-mall, perhaps a little gritty, yet safe and varied experience. If you click here you'll find a Google map that shows you the Glebe area of Ottawa. Roughly delineated, it's the stretch of Rue Bank (Bank Street), number 85 on the map, that stretches between Pretoria St. just south of the #417 (Queensway) down to Holmwood Avenue. In the Glebe you will find Art, Automotive Sales, Bakeries, Banks, Ballroom Dance Classes, Computer Services, Craft Shops, Design, Entertainment Venues, Furniture Stores, Gift Shops, Restaurants, Souvenirs, Sports Equipment.... and so on. The list seems almost endless. When you get to the Glebe, don't forget to wander down the side streets extending east and west off Bank Street. Some treasure troves can be found there, as well. Perhaps pick up a take out meal and wander the few blocks east from The Glebe to the world famous Rideau Canal which flows adjacent to Queen Elizabeth Drive. You are sure to find some nice benches and a lovely park to relax and enjoy your lunch. Not sure where? Have a look at the map link noted above. It's easy to get to. The Glebe is only about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) from Parliament Hill in downtown Ottawa. Carlingwood Shopping CenterNext up on our Ottawa shopping hit parade is the Carlingwood Shopping Center.
This shopping center is located at the corner of Carling Avenue and Woodroffe Avenue towards Ottawa's west end. It's about 12 kilometers (about 7.4 miles) from Ottawa's Parliament Buildings to the Carlingwood Shopping Center. Please click here for a Google Map of the Carlingwood Shopping Center area. Visit Carlingwood if you would like to wander about 120 different stores and services in an enclosed and air conditioned facility. The vast parking area surrounding the mall can handle 2500+ vehicles. Rainy day in Ottawa? Consider Carlingwood for some well spent hours. Click here for the Carlingwood Shopping Center web site. St. Laurent Shopping Center
It's not just that it's full of shops, attractions, restaurants and entertainment, which it is, and it's not just because it was the focal point for my social scene as I grew up in east Ottawa, which it was, it's because long before the St. Laurent Shopping Center came into existence, the grounds on which it is located were a huge wetland and swamp. At that time I didn't know Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer from Adam, being knee high to grasshopper myself and barely able to read. Yet I lived their fictional lives along with my friends, building forts in the trees, crafting log rafts and poling around the swamp like 18th century exporers. We camped over in our lodgings many times, had camp fires, etc. It was a magical time in, for us, a magical place. Flash forward to today, and the sizable St. Laurent Mall offers parking for thousands of cars, is conveniently located just off the Queensway at St. Laurent Boulevard, and is only 8.2 kilometers (5 miles) from Canada's Parliament Buildings. Click here for a Google Map of the St. Laurent area. The center of the map is a grey area marked St. Laurent Centre. That's the St. Laurent Shopping Center.
