Frederic Remington Art MuseumIt's a day trip from Ottawa, Canada's nation's capital. Where?The Frederic Remington Art Museum is located in picturesque Ogdensburg, New York State. Ogdensburg is just across the St. Lawrence River from Johnstown, Ontario, and Johnstown is on the river, directly south of where the #416 highway out of Ottawa reaches the Ontario primary east-to-west artery, highway #401. Since it's all high speed highway south out of Ottawa, you can drive to the Johnstown / Ogdensburg bridge in just over an hour. That would be the crossing you would take to get to Ogdensburg from Ottawa, or points east.
Border CrossingIf you want to take in Remington's artwork, remember that the bridge to Ogdensburg (and the one at Hill Island) is a border crossing and you will need appropriate documentation to cross...in both directions! If you aren't sure you'll want to check with the Canada Border Services Agency for up-to-the-minute regulations. I, as a Canadian citizen, am comfortable crossing into and out of the U.S. with a Canadian Passport, and a bona fide reason to enter the U.S. What's There?Born in Canton NY in 1909, Remington was skilled at brings the images of the Old West to live on the pages of magazines and in his statuary. The Frederic Remington Museum also contains his oil paintings and sketches featuring the Northern wilderness. Visitors will benefit by an "insiders" view of the life of the artist through artifacts, excerpts from his library, his tools, sketches, photos etc, all housed in the historic 1809 Parish Mansion. Eva's Education CenterSince 2004 the Eva Caten Remington Education Center has been open on the site. Directed primarily to children between four and fourteen, this is a hands on center encouraging fun with creative play, sketching and modeling with artist's materials. Eva was Frederic's wife. Hours etc.The museum is open year round, though the days open and hours change depending on the time of year. They are closed New Year's Day, Easter, Thanksgiving (the U.S. celebration) and Christmas. There is an admission fee. Frederic Remington Art Museum
